Soma Chorus is an experiential, body-based vocal workshop for cis, trans, and self-identifying women, led by Joline Baylis, a singer-songwriter, recording artist, choir director and vocal coach.

In Soma Chorus, we approach singing from a somatic perspective. Our goal is to connect with our internal experience of singing. We will focus on how it feels to use our voice, rather than judging ourselves on what we sound like. This is a safe and compassionate space to explore our voice and sing together with other women.

Join us for Soma Chorus and come home to the power of your authentic voice.

  • In Soma Chorus, we will approach singing from a somatic perspective. Our goal is to connect with our internal experience of singing. We will focus on how it feels to use our voice, rather than judging ourselves on what we sound like.

We'll draw on the principles of Somatic Voicework TM to gain a deeper connection with our voice, and to address any challenges that arise (physical, emotional, or creative). Joline will guide us through exercises and techniques to release tension in our body and open up our voice in a safe and gentle way. We will experiment with singing and harmonizing together, allowing our intuition and curiosity guide our expression.

Many of us have come to judge our voice by external factors. We may have been told that we couldn’t sing, or that others didn’t like the way we sounded. Maybe we have strained ourselves to sing with more power or projection. Or, perhaps more likely, we have learned to keep our voice contained, fearing embarrassment, or believing that we shouldn’t take up too much space or speak our truth.

These are some of the ways that mental constructs and emotional trauma can affect our voice, and rob us of the pleasure of our free and full expression.

By approaching singing from a somatic perspective, we can come to experience our voice as a safe and grounding tool for healing. Our voice can help to regulate our nervous system, release stuck emotion and let go of negative self-beliefs and stories.

  • 1. Tolerance and Inclusivity Policy

    • All singers are welcome, and will be treated with respect, regardless of racial identity, ethnicity, cultural identity, religion, beliefs, physical ability, socioeconomic status, social class, age, sexual orientation, etc.

    • We are a community built on collaboration, support and encouragement. Singing and exploring our voices together is a vulnerable endeavour, and it is expected that all participants will respect and celebrate each other's abilities, ideas, creativity and feelings. Criticism and competition have no place in Soma Chorus and will not be allowed.

    2. COVID-19 and Respiratory Illness Safety Policy

    Illness Reporting and Attendance

    • Please do not attend the Soma Chorus workshop if you are experiencing any suspected symptoms of COVID-19 or other respiratory illness such as cold and flu. These symptoms include but are not limited to the following: cough, nasal congestion, headache, sore throat, fatigue, loss of taste or smell, fever, shortness of breath, or chest pain or pressure, unless these symptoms are normal for you, or related to a chronic condition (see below).

    • Please use the BC COVID-19 Self-Assessment Tool at bc.thrive.health/covid19/en and follow the guidance provided.

    Exposure to Illness and Attendance

    • Because COVID-19 is highly transmissable before symptoms appear, please do not attend if you have had a known exposure to COVID-19 within 5 days prior to rehearsal and are likely to have contracted the illness. Here are some definitions and examples of various risk levels of exposure: Exposure Level Self-Assessment Tool

    3. Scent Sensitivity Policy

    • Certain scents and chemicals, even in small amounts, can trigger allergic reactions or asthmatic attacks, as well as other symptoms such as dizziness, migraines, shortness of breath, or light-headedness.

    • Participants are asked to be considerate in their use of scented products such as perfumes, colognes, aftershave, hair products or lotions, before and during the workshop.

    4. Privacy Policy

    • Personal information collected is used to identify participants, determine services and instruction required, and protect the safety and security of participants.

    • All personal information shared before or during the workshop, and/or in private, whether verbal or written, shall remain confidential.

    • We agree to respect your privacy, and no personal information shall be shared with third parties.

    Singing and Somatic Voicework TM

    • In Somatic Voicework TM the focus is on healthy vocal function, and the practice rests on a great respect for and sensitivity to the responses of the body while we explore singing and developing the voice. Emphasis is on free and easy use of the voice, and we do not seek to strain, contort or push the voice beyond what is comfortable. Every effort will be made to ensure that our work together does not create undue stress on, or injury to the voice.

    • Soma Chorus participants assume full responsibility for any risks involved in participation. If you are concerned about the impact of singing on your voice, you may wish to consult a medical professional or specialist prior to registering for the workshop.

COVID-19, Communicable Disease, Health and Safety

    • While we make every effort to create a safe environment in regard to COVID-19 and other communicable diseases, participants agree to self-monitor, prioritize the health and safety of their fellows, and assume full responsibility for any risks involved in group singing.

    • Joline Baylis, Soma Chorus, Rain Coast Choir, and the Well Studios assume no liability for any illness, injury or damages that occur as a result of participation in Soma Chorus vocal workshops.
